COLOURFUL NIGHT SKY ABOVE TETONS AND SNAKE RIVER, WYOMING, 2013
Babak Tafreshi
“This picture was taken [at] the Grand Geyser [in Yellowstone] National Park, not far from Jackson Hole, [Wyoming]. It was a unique opportunity because on this night there happened to be very active airglow, the natural emission of light at the edge of space. This faint, yellowish glow is visible to astronauts on the Earth’s space station. Normally this airglow is very faint from the ground. But on that particular night, probably due to high solar activity, it was very intense and colorful. I couldn’t see the colors with my naked eye, but they were visible to the camera, moving across the sky in all kinds of forms.
I was at that location because I was so inspired in my photography by one of Ansel Adams’ famous Snake River images, which was taken from the very spot that I took this picture. For years I had wanted to repeat that Ansel Adams picture at night.”
