Mother's Love: Hors d' commerce

Alejandro Prieto

“This image was taken during the annual feeding of the flamingo chicks at the main nesting area at Rio Lagartos in Mexico. To capture this photograph, I had to move the camera around blind at night, and get the birds accustomed to it, so as not to upset the colony. When a flamingo chick hatches, both parents take turns feeding it, first with a special liquid baby food they produce in their throats called crop milk, then with regurgitated regular flamingo food as the chicks grows. Flamingo chicks are born with grey and white feathers, and do not turn pink for a year or two.”
