About the Photograph

In the picturesque Western Cape Province of South Africa is a quaint fishing village by the name of Gansbaai. It is known for having an abundance of Great White Sharks in its waters, where cage diving is a major tourist attraction.

Along the shore of Gansbaai, in the Walker Bay Nature Reserve, lies Klipgat Cave (pictured). The cave reached cultural, historical and world heritage significance due to a 1992 excavation, which revealed stone tools and human bones dating back some 70,000 years. Klipgat Cave is one of the most important historical sites in the Western Cape and one of only three places in South Africa where such old remains have been excavated.

The area around Klipgat Cave is also popular with tourists as a whale-watching destination, particularly for Southern Right Whales who come within meters of the rocks that line the edges of kelp beds along the coastline.

In the Photographer’s Own Words

“Dereck and I were investigating a nature reserve called Grootbos, which is close to Gansbaai where the caves are, we were looking at the Grootbos conservation and community work.

I had a unique insight into the remarkable view that ancient man had. These caves had once been lived in by Mussel Cracker man 60,000 years ago. They lived right up against the ocean collecting and eating mussels and other seafood while using the cave as protection against predators."
