The Departure: Artist Proof

Hideyuki Katagiri

"I went to the Omiya train station in Saitama, Japan to capture the types of emotions–joy, hope, sorrow–that are visible on travelers’ faces. As one particularly popular train painted with stripes began to leave the station, I caught a quiet moment of a conductor at work. I feel that the train is not only a means of travel but also a journey to the destination."

About the Photograph:

This train, called Cassiopeia, is waiting for departure at Omiya station. The 12-car Cassiopeia began service in 1999 and pioneered luxury train travel in Japan. Fittingly named after the constellation Cassiopeia – a beautiful queen in Greek mythology – it was the most luxurious express sleeper night train operated by Japan Rail East (JR East). Cassiopeia traveled the 16-hour and 30-minute journey from Tokyo to Sapporo. Regular service finished in March of 2016, but the train is still operated as a chartered service for packaged tours.
